The Tree of Mary in Al-Matariya is one of the most famous sites associated with the Holy Family's route in Egypt and one of the most renowned worldwide. The site is linked to the tradition stating that the Holy Family took shelter under the tree's shade during their journey. It is said that when the Holy Family arrived at Al-Matariya near Ain Shams, the Lord caused a spring of water to gush forth from which they drank, and the Virgin Mary washed the Child Jesus's clothes there and poured the water onto the ground, from which grew a fragrant plant with a beautiful scent called balsam (al-balsam or al-balasan). A street in the area still bears this name today, and over the centuries the site became an important spiritual and cultural destination. The site includes the historic tree and its surrounding area, in addition to commemorative and interpretive elements that help visitors understand the site's significance within the context of the Holy Journey.
It was visited by Empress Eugénie of France, who was blessed there during her visit to Egypt while attending the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal.

The development works aim to improve the connection between the Church of the Holy Family and the Tree of Mary by upgrading the path linking them, creating an integrated service area, and providing bus waiting areas along with security and emergency services.
